Lightspeed is growing at a fast pace and we’re looking for a Team Lead to join our Data Engineering practice within the NuORDER data product team. This role is ideal for someone who has started their leadership journey - through mentorship, technical ownership, or informal people leadership - and is ready to step into a role where they set direction, build a roadmap, and grow a team, while still staying hands-on as an engineer.

You are inspired by generating value through data and by helping others do the same. As a leading member of this team, you will be responsible not only for building high-quality data systems, but also for shaping how we build them, what we prioritize, and how the team grows.

Note:As a global company with employees and clients outside of Quebec, fluency in English as a working language is required for this position.

The Role:

As a Data Engineering Team Lead, you will shape the product team’s data infrastructure and the team that builds it. You will own the technical roadmap for data engineering, ensure strong delivery, and act as a multiplier for the people around you.

You will still be a hands-on senior data engineer, designing scalable data pipelines, robust data models, and efficient transformations, but you will also provide technical leadership, mentorship, and prioritization across the team.

You will work closely with analytics engineers, data scientists, product managers, and software engineering leaders to ensure our data platform evolves in line with Lightspeed’s business and product needs.

What you'll do:

Technical Leadership & Delivery

  • Own the data engineering roadmap, translating business and analytics needs into clear technical priorities.
  • Set technical direction and standards for data modeling, pipeline design, and data quality.
  • Make architectural decisions and guide the team toward scalable, maintainable solutions.
  • Balance short-term delivery with long-term platform health.

Hands-on Engineering

  • Design and implement clean, scalable, and performant data models using Dataform and dbt.
  • Own the curation and transformation layer, ensuring best practices for SQL-based transformations and data integrity.
  • Build, orchestrate, and monitor data pipelines using Apache Airflow.
  • Automate ETL/ELT processes for reliable and scalable data ingestion and transformation.
  • Optimize warehouse performance through efficient SQL and modeling strategies.
  • Implement data validation, anomaly detection, and automated testing.

Team & Stakeholder Leadership

  • Mentor and support data engineers, helping them grow technically and professionally.
  • Run technical reviews, unblock delivery, and promote engineering best practices.
  • Partner with analytics, data science, and business teams to ensure the data platform meets their needs.
  • Improve how work is planned, prioritized, and delivered across the team.

What you’ll be bringing to the team:

  • Strong SQL skills for data modeling, transformation, and performance tuning.
  • Experience with SQL-based transformation frameworks (we use Dataform and dbt).
  • Experience building and scheduling workflows using Airflow or similar tools.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud data platforms (we use GCP).
  • Strong understanding of ETL/ELT, batch vs streaming, and modern data architectures.
  • Proficiency in Python for automation and data pipelines.
  • Experience with CI/CD, version control, and testing in data environments.
  • Solid understanding of data governance, security, and compliance (GDPR, SOX, etc.).
  • Experience mentoring, coaching, or acting as a technical lead for other engineers.
  • Comfortable setting direction, owning outcomes, and working with autonomy.
  • Ability to translate business needs into technical plans and priorities.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders.

You don’t need to have been a formal people manager - we care more about your ability to lead, influence, and own outcomes.

Bonus Skills (Nice to Have):

  • Experience with MongoDB/NoSQL.
  • Experience with Looker or other BI tools.
  • Infrastructure-as-code experience (e.g., Terraform).

What's in it for you:
